Steve, Randy, Jill, Willy, John, and Jim look at what we are about to take on.
It was not long after our hike in that flags began to sprout where items have been found. The area in which we were working had been shelled heavily and there were fragments everywhere!
There were a few impacted and even a dropped bullet or two found. This Union 3-ringer was totally flat on the back side from impacting against a rock.
This Borman fuse was the most complete fuse found, though many pieces of brass Parrott and Hotchkiss fuses were found.
With the high temps and rugged terrain we were in, we were all out of water and sucking wind by mid afternoon. We still had a fair hike out to the closest road they could pick us up on. Willy got us some more water and Gatorade and we made short work of it! Steve and John, (photo on the right) had toted the backpacks with all of the shell frags and were glad for the chance to rest. Steve's pack had at least 40 pounds of "scrap metal".
Jill, Wayne, Jim, Steve, John, Lamar, Randy and Willy. One volunteer (Jerry G. who was dropped off at his car on our way back to ours) had already left and Kevin had to take the photo. One tired crew!
